The onset of age can bring a variety of skin concerns. Arguably the most commonly seen in both men and women from the age of 30 onwards are expression lines and dynamic wrinkles. Lines on the forehead, around the eyes and even on the nose can be a nuisance and give the appearance of a tired and ageing complexion and heavy eyelids.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing the small muscles in the face that cause it to crease over time. It is a misconception that Botox fills lines and wrinkles; this is why Botox is seen as a preventative injectable, unlike dermal fillers, which restore volume.
What are anti-wrinkle injections (botox)?
Anti-wrinkle injections utilise a substance called Botulinum Toxin Type A; the brand Botox by Allergan has become the household name, although other products exist.
The discovery of the toxin’s cosmetic applications was a happy accident. In 1987, a Canadian eye doctor named Jean Carruthers used Botox to treat blepharospasm in a patient. The woman complained when Jean didn’t inject her forehead because she said the injections made her lines disappear. Botox is used in medicine for involuntary spasms, incontinence, depression, excessive sweating, and lazy eye syndrome. Whilst anti-wrinkle effects were discovered by accident, this is now one of Botox’s most popular applications.
Anti-wrinkle injections (otherwise known as Botox®) are a prescription-only medicine and must only be injected by a qualified and highly skilled medical professional. We inject minuscule amounts into the muscles which cause facial expressions and subsequently, expression lines and dynamic wrinkles.
Botox blocks the nerve receptors responsible for causing the movement of the facial muscles and temporarily relaxes these muscles, smoothing the skin and reducing lines and wrinkles for up to 4 months at a time.

Are there any contraindications to anti-wrinkle injections?
All medical treatments carry some degree of risk and these will be discussed at your consultation, prior to any treatment being carried out. Botulinum Toxin Type A can only be legally prescribed by medically-trained and well-equipped healthcare professionals. Some side-effects may occur and include:
- Bruising or swelling at injection sites (similar to gnat bites)
- Redness
- Asymmetry of expression
- Drooping of the brow or eyelid
- Temporary headache or a sensation of ‘tightness’ or ‘heaviness’
You will be asked to perform a series of facial expressions for 10 mins post treatment to help product uptake.
Botox can be used in the upper and lower face, underarms, and for specific uses such as listed above. It’s important to consider that Botox can treat dynamic lines, static lines, deeper grooves, or extensive wrinkles which appear when the face is at rest. These can be treated with dermal fillers, in conjunction with Botox, or as a separate, stand-alone treatment.
Some results can be seen after just 24 hours, however, for optimum results, expect to wait between 2 to 3 weeks for the full effect to appear.
This all depends on your natural response to Botox. Some patients can see the results lasting up to 6 months, others up to around 3 months. Best results are seen for around 8 weeks, after which, you can expect to see movement recovering. We do not recommend repeat treatments within any 3 month period.

Botox injections have been used in medicine since the 1950’s and Botox for wrinkle-smoothing was approved for use in the 80’s. Wrinkle-smoothing injections are virtually pain-free, take minutes to administer and not only smooth expression lines for months at a time, but can actually prevent new lines from forming.
This procedure is extremely straightforward and requires no prior anaesthetic. You’ll be able to relax on the couch and a series of marks will be made on your face with a white skin pencil, to ensure a precise placement. Then, the practitioner will inject tiny amounts of Botox, using extremely fine needles. This should not be painful, although if you are extremely sensitive or squeamish, a small amount of topical anaesthetic can be applied prior to the treatment. The treatment takes around 10 minutes to administer, but you’ll be in the clinic room for up to 30 minutes for marking and aftercare advice.
You will feel a slight pricking sensation at the sites of injection, however, these are minimally uncomfortable and in some cases, cannot be felt, due to the fine gauge of the needles used.
Botox is suitable for most patients who are experience early and advanced signs of ageing and can see expression lines appear.
