As the ageing process takes its toll, the skin and facial structure can suffer.
The depletion of bone, fat and substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid (HA) means that the once supportive scaffold for the skin is compromised and facial hollows, furrows and sagging can appear. This can lead to a myriad of concerns, from eye bags to jowls, sunken cheeks to thinning lips.
Treatable conditions with dermal fillers
- Sagging skin, such as heavy lower cheeks or jowls
- Dehydrated skin
- Sunken areas and loss of volume (temples, cheeks, tear troughs, lips)
- Asymmetry or unbalanced features (nose, jawline, lips)
- Areas of the skin requiring more hydration and replenishment
- Areas of the face requiring augmentation (nose, lips, jawline, cheeks)
- Softening and smoothing lines around the mouth

What are dermal fillers?
Most safe and reliable dermal fillers on the market today are comprised of HA, a substance found naturally in the cells of healthy and youthful skin as well as the joints, eyes and connective tissues. It holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water, making it a super-hydrator.
HA dermal fillers are contained in an aqueous gel-like substance. They range in viscosity, depending on the areas for which they are designed. Dermal fillers can be very fluid, treating superficial skin conditions and rejuvenating finer areas such as tear troughs (under the eyes) all the way through to very thick, supportive substances which build, plump and support the facial anatomy; perfect for areas such as the cheeks, nose and jawline. When injected using a needle or cannula, they can provide an immediate improvement as well as helping to restore and hydrate the skin in the 2 to 4 weeks that follow the treatment.

The procedure
Basic dermal filler procedures require no anaesthetic as the dermal filler contains local anaesthetic. It is simple and straight-forward, involving a few tiny injections directly into the skin, and takes between 15–30 minutes.
How it works
Dermal fillers are substance/gels injected beneath the skin’s surface to smooth wrinkles and add volume and contour. The products are composed of stabilised hyaluronic acid (HA) which occurs naturally in the cells of the skin. It works by drawing in water and therefore augmenting the skin, thus reducing the wrinkle treated. It is by no means permanent and is totally biodegradable. Depending on what type of dermal fillers, results can last between one to two years.
Are there any reasons why I shouldn’t have dermal fillers?
You mustn’t have dermal fillers if any of the following are applicable:
- In combination with facial peelings, laser or ultrasound-based treatments.
- If the patient has cutaneous disorders, inflammation or an infection at or near the treatment site.
- Clients with autoimmune diseases.
- In pregnant or breast-feeding mothers and in children.
- Sportsmen and women should be informed that hyaluronic acid dermal fillers contain an active ingredient which may give a positive result in a drug test.

Dermal fillers can be used in a number of areas. However the most commonly treated areas with dermal fillers are –
- Forehead wrinkles
- Temples
- Tired Eyes
- Cheeks
- Nasolabial folds
- Lip contour, corners, volume
- Marionette lines
- Chin
- Nose
- Jawline
- Hands
- Decolletage
You will see results immediately following your dermal filler treatment. However, expect the full and optimum results to emerge around 2-4 weeks post treatment. It is at this time that the product would have fully softened and any swelling or bruising would have fully dissipated. You may wish to return to the clinic at this time to have a post-treatment examination and any top ups to balance asymmetry or to make additional tweaks.
Hyaluronic acid treatments are not permanent and usually last up to 22 months
It’s fairly normal to only need 1 treatment in any given area. However, it is always best to start conservatively and your practitioner will discuss your individual treatment programme and whether they feel that multiple sessions may be required, especially if multiple areas require treatment.
Dermal fillers may be used to replace volume loss and restore structural support, giving the patient a more youthful appearance. The aim is to make the face more harmonious and rejuvenated.
Once you and your practitioner are happy to go ahead with the treatment, you will be asked to lay or sit on the treatment couch. As most dermal fillers now contain an anaesthetic, pre-numbing is usually not necessary. Depending on the area to be treated, your practitioner will insert a needle or cannula and inject small amounts of the chosen dermal filler in to the area of concern. The treatment should take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the
area/s. This is a very simple and straightforward procedure for a suitably trained and medically-qualified practitioner.
Dermal fillers now contain Lidocaine, an injectable anaesthesia, therefore the treatment is relatively comfortable. You may however experience an initial pricking sensation when the needle or cannula is injected and some slight stinging when the substance is placed in to your skin, however, this is normal and will subside quickly.
Downtime is minimal and although there may be some minor bruising, swelling and tenderness in the treated area, this will ease in a few days and can be treated with ice or Arnica gel to speed recovery.
As the dermal fillers we use here at Pure Perfection Clinic are clinically-proven to be safe and all our practitioners are medically-trained and approved to administer this treatment; most patients who display the first or advanced signs of ageing can benefit from dermal fillers in a number of ways.
