At Pure Perfection Clinic we believe in a holistic approach to skin health. While our advanced devices, professional treatments and medical-grade skincare all play an important part, what you eat every day has a huge impact on the way your skin looks and ages. In this latest blog, we take a look at how having a healthy diet can improve your skin health, along with some tips from our Clinic Director Sara.
Why do we need to eat a balanced diet?
It’s no secret that eating healthily has a significant impact on our appearance. Diet has a big impact on our skin, and excessive consumption of sugar can damage collagen and elastic proteins, leading to wrinkles and ageing skin. Nutrition can affect inflammation, collagen production and hydration levels so when the body is nourished, the skin is better equipped to repair itself.
Which foods could improve skin health?
A diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to provide the vitamins and minerals that your skin needs. Fruits that are rich in anti-oxidants such as berries and citrus fruits can help to protect the skin. Healthy fats from foods such as avocados, olive oil, nuts and oily fish can also help to support the skin barrier. Foods rich in protein are also essential for the skin as amino acids are the building blocks of collagen and elastin, helping skin remain supple, firm and youthful.
Which foods could damage skin health?
On the other hand, foods that are high in refined sugar, processed foods and unhealthy fats could trigger inflammation in the skin. In particular, excessive consumption of sugar causes a process called glycation, whereby important collagen and elastin proteins are damaged, leading to deep wrinkles and aged skin. A bad diet can also show up in the skin as redness, breakouts or accelerated ageing.
Drinking alcohol can also reduce the level of vitamins in the skin as well as lowering collagen levels. This means your skin could appear dryer and dehydrated.
Stay hydrated Hydration is also important for good skin health as drinking water helps to maintain elasticity and support detoxification in the skin. Foods with a high water content such as cucumber and watermelon are also good options for hydrated skin, combined with the right topical skincare.
Sara’s healthy skin tips
Sara believes in a holistic approach to life from eating a healthy diet with low levels of stress and healthy relationships is essential. She says,
“Taking supplements is an important aspect of my daily skincare routine, supported by a healthy diet full of nutrients. I’m also a big advocate of taking Vitamin D, along with turmeric and ginger which I’ve been taking for a long time. In addition to using a good skincare routine combined with in clinic treatments to keep me looking my best, prevent ageing and reverse damage.”
One of Sara’s other tips is to make life easier at home when cooking by utilising new technology. She uses a kitchen device called Thermomix which makes it easier to prepare home made meals at home while she is busy running a business and being a mum. It helps her to prepare healthier meals and avoids the temptation to choose takeaways or relying on processed foods.
In summary, healthy eating is about making small, sustainable changes such as eating more nutrient-dense foods, low in sugar to keep your skin looking good for longer. Cutting back before you notice these changes can make a big difference to your long-term appearance.
