While many people desire luscious thick hair on their head, it’s not usually wanted elsewhere on the body. Hair on the legs, arms, underarms, face, chest and back can grow fast, making it time consuming and expensive to manage with traditional hair removal methods such as shaving and waxing.
In-clinic treatments can be more effective at removing hair permanently, allowing you to feel more confident in your body and self!
What is the Purpose of Body Hair?
Hair is a normal and natural aspect of human biology that can grow all over the body. Our early ancestors likely had more body hair to help regulate their temperature against environmental elements, but as we have evolved less hair has been needed.
While you may prefer to remove it for aesthetic or comfort-related reasons, it’s important to remember that it does have useful functions.
The primary purpose of hair is protection. It helps regulate body temperature by providing insulation against cold weather, while also acting as a barrier from harmful UV radiation and sun damage.
Hair follicles also have a sensory function. They are connected to nerve endings, making them sensitive to touch and able to detect subtle environmental changes.
Sebaceous glands attached to hair follicles produce sebum. This is an oily substance that moisturises and protects skin, keeping it hydrated and supple.
How Does Hair Grow?
Hair growth is influenced by a variety of factors that include genetics, hormones, medication, nutrition and general health.
It goes through four key phases, which are important to be aware of to effectively manage hair-related concerns. These are:
Anagen phase: cells in the hair bulb divide rapidly during this phase, producing new hair. This can last anywhere from two to seven years.
Catagen phase: this is a transitional phase whereby hair follicles shrink and detach from the bloody supply. It lasts for about two to three weeks.
Telogen phase: during this ‘resting’ phase, hair follicles remain dormant and no new growth occurs. This lasts for approximately three to four months.
Exogen phase: this is when old hair sheds to make way for new growth and typically results in the loss of 50-100 hairs a day.
Not all hair follicles are in the same phase at the same time, which is why hair shedding and growth is a continuous process.
Understanding Excessive Hair Growth
Some people find that their hair grows thick and fast! While this may simply be because of your genetics, it can also be associated with underlying medical conditions.
Here are some reasons you may experience excessive hair growth, also known as hirsutism:
Hormonal changes: puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy and peri-menopause can all alter hair growth patterns.
Hormonal imbalances: elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) can lead to excessive hair growth. This is seen in conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal gland disorders and thyroid disorders.
Medication: anabolic steroids, corticosteroids, hormonal contraceptives can all exacerbate hair growth.
Adrenal or ovarian tumours: these can produce excess androgens, leading to hair growth.
Cushing’s Syndrome: hair growth occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to high levels of the hormone cortisol in sufferers.
Permanently Removing Unwanted Body Hair
At Pure Perfection Clinic, we offer two fantastic treatments that can permanently get rid of hair on the face, legs and body. Whether it’s that pesky chin hair you want gone for good or want lovely smooth legs for summer, we can help!
Suitable for most skin types, this laser device gently removes even the most stubborn hair for permanent results.
DiolazeXL works by directing light energy into the skin, which heats and damages hair follicles to inhibit future hair growth.
The advanced treatment has one of the largest laser spot sizes, making it convenient and fast. DiolazeXL can be used on the bikini area, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, stomach, neck, chin and sideburns.
Depending on the extend of your hair growth, between six to 10 treatments are usually recommended for best results. You may see around 30% hair reduction after each procedure.
The unique cooling technology ensure DiolazeXL treatment is as comfortable as possible.
This treatment works by inserting a hand-held device with a fine needle into the skin. It delivers shortwave radio frequencies to your hair follicles, which stop new hair growth and cause existing hairs to fall out.
Electrolysis is most effective for hairs on the underarms, face and bikini line. For larger areas such as the face or back, more treatment sessions that take longer will be needed. We usually recommend eight to 12 treatments for best results.
Some patients describe electrolysis treatment as feeling like a tiny shock every other second or a heated tingling sensation across the treatment area. We offer topical anaesthetic to numb the area if you are nervous of discomfort.
